The Resaurant Industry

Tourism, food and drink manufacturing and service, and science-based research are major employers locally, particularly around York.

The electronic equipment and metals industries have been taking on more people, although there are now generally fewer jobs available in the engineering industry (with the exception of railway engineering) than in the past.

Manufacturing and retail selling have a number of job vacancies and hotels, pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants are also actively recruiting.

Half of York and North Yorkshire employers who had difficulty filling job vacancies in 2001 said that they needed skilled trades people (e.g. decorators and roofers)

Businesses in the food and drink industry are finding it very difficult to fill job vacancies. There are likely to be job opportunities as bottlers, canners and packers, butchers and bakers.

Agriculture, fishing and manufacturing industries have been important to the area in the past, but don't have so many job vacancies nowadays.
