There have been massive changes in employment in South
Yorkshire as the steel industry has declined, followed by the coal industry.
The focus now is on new industries such as the cultural and creative industries
(e.g. film-making) and high technology manufacturing. Other industries that are
important employers in South Yorkshire are engineering, including the
manufacture of passenger and goods trains, food and drink manufacturing,
business and financial services.
Health, transport and public services organisations (e.g.
the police, public transport and education) have had plenty of vacancies - for
example for bus and coach drivers and industrial trainers. The retail and
distribution industry and the construction industry have also had trouble
recruiting new staff so there are opportunities for people with the right
skills.
South Yorkshire employers have predicted that this will
continue so that they expect more vacancies that they can fill for sales staff,
crafts and trades people, technical and professional staff (e.g. managers,
supervisors, IT specialists).
