Farming and manufacturing are still strong industries in Humberside. Other important employers are transport, education and public administration e.g. local councils.

Although employment in manufacturing has been declining, this has been at a slower rate than in most other areas.

Retailing is the fastest growing area of employment in Humberside. Manufacturing businesses - of food and beverages and chemicals - have also been taking on new workers. There have also been increases in the number of teachers, teachers' assistants and health professionals (nurses, midwives).

Employers have had more vacancies than they can fill in health sector organisations, hotels and restaurants.

Recently there has been a demand for people with engineering skills and skilled crafts people such as electricians, plumbers and joiners. Drivers are also required as are sales people and maintenance fitters.
