Job prospects |

The coal industry lost over 80,000 jobs in the 1990s and by 1997 there were fewer than 18,000 jobs left. There are now less than 9,000 jobs in deep mining in England. The closures at Selby Mine confirm that employment prospects in the industry are worse than ever and you may need to look for a different type of work. Other important industries like building, construction and engineering have also lost jobs but, unlike the coal industry, construction and engineering really do need new workers. Business services and finance (such as banking) offer opportunities and transport, distribution, warehousing and the retail industries also have many vacancies. ![]() Qualifications are becoming more essential to move into new areas of work and employers do look for workers with qualifications as well as a good range of skills and up-to-date training. Help is available to get accreditation or recognition for skills you have but may not have certificates for. If can be useful to talk to an adviser to find out what skills and qualifications are required in local industries that you are interested in. The next few pages give you an idea of the main industries near where you live. Ring the number below to be put through to a local adviser in your area. The Helpline can also give advice to your partner or spouse if they are considering gaining employment. |
