Jo and John had been in the coal industry all their
working lives. They worked in the Prince of Wales Colliery until this summer.
John was made redundant in June and Jo, a supervisor, a bit later in August.
They now work as LGV drivers for Gaffers in Castleford.
Jo decided that he needed to make himself more employable
and so chose to do a PSV course that he paid for himself whilst he was still
working in the pit. Both John and Jo then did their Class C and Class C+E
tests.
The new jobs with Gaffers do have some real benefits. John
and Jo see their families more and have greater independence. They enjoy not
having to work shifts and working in daylight. For both John and Jo it is
important that they don't have to travel far to work. Although they are earning
less money, they are pleased with their new jobs.
The LGV training mentioned above was arranged and
delivered by Jobcentre Plus as part of the redundancy support for the
mineworkers at the Prince of Wales Colliery. Ring the Helpline to find out what
is available to you. It is worth noting that some companies will let you have
trial periods to see if the work suits you. |
