WHICH job would suit your skills, qualifications and personality?

You may be able to think of a new job that you would like to do, but does it use the skills and qualifications you have now, and will a little more learning - now or when you start the new job - help you get on better?

Mining work can be looked at in 5 different ways or 'functions'. One of these will probably best describe the work that you do:

  1. mining/coalface
  2. mechanical
  3. electrical
  4. admin/office/management
  5. supervisory.
  Track Works

Within these 5 areas, what sort of work do you do?

  • Repairing, maintaining or installing equipment or tools e.g. cables, pipes, track
  • Driving or using equipment or tools e.g. tunnelling, driving cranes or bulldozers
  • Checking/assessing equipment or tools for safety or risk e.g. fault finding, monitoring air, noise or dust - Using specialist equipment e.g. breathing apparatus or conveyancing equipment
  • Organising and overseeing the staff e.g. arranging shift patterns, checking welfare issues, assessing work.

All of your skills are important and could be helpful in getting another job. It may be useful to make a note of your main skills. You can use the list above to give you some ideas.

What about some of these other skills: Are you good at working with other people in a team, or at leading teams? Can you keep records, work with numbers, or use a computer?

Which jobs are you qualified to do? Examples might be: driver, welder, electrician, joiner, manager, deputy, supervisor or administrator.

Do your hobbies or voluntary work mean you are already experienced in other work? Examples might be: sports coach, ground maintenance and landscaping, social or caring work.

What qualifications do you already have and do you know of any that you might like to get? Examples are City & Guilds, NVQs, BTEC Diplomas, A levels or degrees.

Certificates for health and safety courses, risk assessment and first aid are also important in other jobs and can make you more attractive to new employers e.g. for jobs in the construction or rail industry.

Answers to these questions will also be useful to you when talking to an adviser who can help identify the sorts of jobs you could consider but may not have heard of.
