HOW will you get where you want to? |
|
Mining, like many other jobs, has its own special skills. However, you are unlikely to have all of the skills or qualifications needed to carry out another type of job. You can try to go it alone but there are plenty of people to help you with finding another job with or without training, so why not take advantage of their advice? You can always ignore it if it seems wrong. Employment advisers at Jobcentre Plus can help you to assess the extent to which your current skills can be used in other types of work. Careers advisers at Guidance Services or Careers Centres are good at helping you and your family to find out about learning and qualifications. You may be advised to gain a new qualification but require little additional training as you already have most of the skills. Once you gain a qualification that is recognised in other industries you will be more attractive to employers and you will have a greater chance of success. There are lots of ways in which you can learn new skills. For example, at an evening class, at a Learndirect Centre (this is a local centre at which you can learn via a computer), using the Internet, on a training course with a new employer or full time study at a local college. A wide range of occupational training can be provided through Jobcentre Plus and other organisations, sometimes even before you have been made redundant. Anyone who is interested in training should first contact the Pithead Information Point if they work for UK Coal, or the Helpline number. These days there are many different and new ways to learn, and those who are around to give advice will be able to help you decide what your preferred learning style is. If you would like to talk to someone about becoming self-employed you can speak to someone at your local Business Advice Centre. |
